Best Colors for a Small Kitchen

Jacobsen Brothers Painting • October 12, 2021

Small kitchens are wonderfully efficient for busy lives, but they can still be the hub of the household with a careful selection of colors to enhance the light and to give a sense of space to a confined area. The professionals at Jacobsen Brothers Painting have compiled some tips to help you make the most of your tiny kitchen, creating an attractive and inviting space.

As you choose your kitchen palette, remember to blend in with surrounding areas to keep a feeling of flow from room-to-room and from hall-to-room. You can keep the same trim color, floor color or ceiling color for continuity.

White

Always timeless, white kitchens make the most of the light and give the greatest feeling of expansiveness. If you have a lot of natural light, consider using different variances of white and off-white to keep it from looking stark and sterile.

When you use white as your hero color in your small kitchen, you can go as dramatic as you want to with the complementary color and accent color. The countertop, backsplash, kitchen island, chairs and accent cabinetry are all backdrops for your complementary color. Your accent color can be added in a couple light, decorative touches. Here are some ideas of complements to pair with your white kitchen:

  • Red and gray
  • Navy blue and wood brown
  • Steel gray and marine blue
  • Aqua/Robin’s Egg Blue/Turquoise and daffodil yellow
  • Mint green and pink rose
  • Antique gray and green grass
  • Onyx and wood brown

Ocean Colors

To give the impression of open skies and endless seas, choose hues with an ocean perspective in mind. Sky blue or mint green used as the hero color could open up a space and then allow you to accent with a white and one of the following:

  • Caribbean blue
  • Aqua
  • Ivy league blue
  • Granite
  • Lilac
  • Moss green
  • Dove gray

Pastels

Small spaces can be enhanced with the comfort factor pastels provide. Grandma’s kitchen may have been a deep buttercup yellow, but today’s kitchen could be pastel lemon yellow and still bring all the happiness. Or, try a pink blush for a charming space that reflects natural light and warms it up. Baby blue or glass green are also light enough for a small kitchen and are welcoming colors.

One Saturated Color

Like a bold statement that draws the eye and won’t let you lose interest? Try one accent color wall in a small kitchen. It could be a whole wall, a backsplash area above the stove, a recessed cabinet shelf, or the island. The rest of the kitchen should be white if you are choosing this high-impact method. A darker hue or a brighter color choice will make a statement. Popular choices include patriot blue, sea blue, pinto brown or mineral gray.
