Paint Finishes: Everything You Need to Know

The paint finishing on your walls and furniture plays a role in building the ideal look of your space. An easy revitalization of your home can be done with new paint finishing, and it can be done within a few hours and on even a small budget.

While most people invest their time in deciding the color of the paint, the essential design excellence comes from the finish of the paint itself. If you are looking to redo the paint of your rooms or furniture, we have a few types of paint finishes and details on how to get your best look.

High-Gloss

If you're looking for the most durable paint finish, high-gloss will be your go-to choice. This paint finish can be used on doors, cabinets, and furniture. On walls, it is usually used for studios.

It’s light-reflective and catches the eye instantly. However, since it has a glass-like reflective finish, you’ll need to assess if it’s right for your space.

The high-gloss finish is easy to clean but is known to reveal imperfections in your walls. This is why hiring a painting company would be best. If you choose to do it yourself, at the minimum you will require a high-density foam roller or quarter-inch roller for smaller spots.

Semi-Gloss

If you’re looking for a glossy paint finish with high durability, semi-gloss is your choice. It can be suitable for high moisture or high traffic areas and it can provide a happy middle ground for homeowners who want something shinier than a satin finish.

Semi-gloss is radiant and pairs well with other finishes and can also be used as an accent. However, like high-gloss, semi-gloss will also reveal imperfections of the surface due to its high sheen.

Satin Finish

This paint finish is best when it comes to durable paints for homes due to its ease of cleaning. A satin finish is not shiny, so you can use it in a variety of rooms – especially the ones that get less natural light.

Being durable, this paint can also be used in humid spaces like bathrooms and kitchens. Moreover, it also has the upper hand over semi-gloss and high-gloss in the sense of hiding imperfections.

Matte/Flat

If you're looking for a paint finish that best hides the imperfections of your wall, a matte finish is your choice. It's non-reflective, soaking up light which ensures that bumps in the walls are hidden. The matte finish also contains the most pigment and provides the best coverage.

Using this paint finish can be cost-effective but do be mindful that it’s harder to clean than other finishes. This puts the risk of scratches at a higher level than other paint finishes.

Eggshell Finish

This finish is seen as the best interior paint for most homes. It has a low-luster sheen which appears soft and slightly velvety. This finish is mildly reflective and it will slightly bounce the light around the room.

The eggshell finish also has the capability of resisting fingerprints and stains. In this sense, it is a better option than a matte finish.
