Living Room Accent Wall Do's

Does your living room look dated and need to be refreshed? Consider painting an accent wall to spruce up the space and give it a fresh, new look. Accent walls are an easy and fun way to change your space without breaking the bank.

You can easily work with your existing furniture and add a few finishing touches with some new decor pieces to tie the room together. There are some tips to keep in mind when painting an accent wall. Read on to learn the basics of accent wall design.

Stick to One Accent Wall

An accent wall is never paired with another one. It is meant to stand out on its own and act as a focal point for the room. When choosing your accent wall, have a plan. An accent wall, particularly one with texture, can be useful in rooms lacking an architectural element.

Depending on the lighting in the room and how the furniture is arranged, your eye will naturally gravitate toward some walls over others. These walls are perfect options for an accent wall.

Refrain From Using the Smallest Wall in the Room

An accent wall is meant to be seen and should impact those who set foot in the room. Opting to turn a small wall space into an accent wall defeats the purpose of creating a strongly contrasting and striking focal point for your space.

If you paint a large wall with a mounted flat-screen television in a dark color, say black or navy, you can create the illusion of a wider space and enhance the home theater aesthetic.

Keep the Wall Color Unique and Different From Other Wall Colors

Get inspired by modern paint designs from home decor magazines or websites. Search for some fantastic colors to help your accent wall stand out.

The rest of your walls should have neutral colors to allow your accent wall to stand out from the remainder of the room. If you don’t want to use vivid, bright colors, you can opt for a more soft neutral tone, but avoid a monotone shade. Make sure that the neutral hue will still bring attention to the wall, even if it does so in a more subdued manner.

To help tie the room together, you can decorate the space with unique pieces like a vase or throw pillow that matches the same hue as your accent wall. The furniture you choose can also impact the accent wall, so have a decor plan and select your items accordingly.

Use Effective Lighting

Furniture and decor items are not the only ways you can embellish your accent wall. By using lighting in a purposeful way, you can make your accent wall stand out even more.

Because it may significantly increase the visual attractiveness of a room, using effective lighting is a crucial component of interior design. Wall lamps can establish focal points in a space and enhance its overall appeal. You can install recessed lighting that offers a subtle illuminated glow to create a more intimate space.
